NEW DELHI: A new analysis has uncovered strategies, including fabricated research and paid authorships and citations, by which organised scientific fraud is increasing and undermining the integrity of science at a rate faster than that at which legitimate science is growing, according to researchers.
Research groups collude to publish papers across multiple journals that often get retracted upon being discovered, results of the analysis, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show.
Researchers, led by those from Northwestern University in the US, also found “brokers” serving as middlemen who enable a mass publishing of fraudulent papers in compromised journals and organised groups evading quality-control measures, such as journal de-indexing.
