GORAKHPUR/LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday hailed the Centre’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms as a “next-generation tax revolution”, while Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav called those a “betrayal of the public”.

Adityanath thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for the GST rate cut, saying the two-slab structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent would ease household expenses, strengthen purchasing power and accelerate India’s journey towards self-reliance.

Essential items like food, medicines and educational material will attract 0 to 5 per cent GST, while luxury goods will face a 40-per cent tax.
