Our launch coincides with the auspicious occasion of Sharadiya Navratri on the day of Durgashtami. Therefore, while writing the first Editor’s Choice for this space, it is quite difficult to ignore this grand occasion that unites people from all walks of life, in some way or another! It is a festival of devotion, spiritualism, and celebration! Though it is a Hindu festival, it enwraps each one from society, irrespective of their faith and belief. Durga Puja, or Navratri, is a fine blend of centuries-old faith, belief in age-old traditions, and the worship of the divine feminine power, the invisible Shakti, without which each of us is insignificant!
As a child, all we learn about this festival is that it is a time to celebrate the victory of good over evil. But is the worship of Devi Shakti, the central energy source for this entire universe, only about her slaying the demon Mahisasura? Definitely not! She is the symbol of feminity, beauty, fertility, motherly love, anger, fear, compassion, power, peace, transformation, and patience; she is the root that is the source of this creation. And this is the time to worship her in nine different forms, known as Navdurga! In all her nine forms, the goddess presents the infinite feminine strength that is not only the soul of the entire creation but the strength that helps the creation sustain generation after generation. Beyond that, she is also the Prakriti, the nature that shelters and mother who nourishes her creation. And when her creation feels intimidated, she is the all-powerful slayer of all demonic forces that threaten peace, prosperity, and dharma.
Worshipping Goddess Durga is worshipping the feminine energy to revitalise the atmosphere! She is Adishakti, Annapurna, Mahadevi, the consort of Mahadev; she is the epitome of Matri Roopa and Matri Shakti, whom her devotees bow down to! The ten hands of Maa Durga are symbolic, and they refer to her being all-powerful and invincible! She is the all-pervasive and primal substance of all that exists in the Mahamaya form!
She is the fierce warrior goddess, signifying power and protection. As a mother, she is associated with regeneration, preservation, nourishment, and protection. In her nine different forms, she is the daughter, then Brahmacharini, then Ardhangini of Shiva, then a mother, powerful and courageous, then she becomes the slayer and destroyer of the demonic forces, calms down and attains patience, and reaches the supreme form of Mahashakti! Her nine different forms mark the beginning of a journey from being a child to an awakened spiritual being!
Durga Puja is the time to honour Navdurga, the nine different Avatars, and achieve one’s full potential through worship, meditation, and right intention. So, let all of us take this opportunity to seek blessing from our beloved mother to achieve our full potential to the greater benefit of the world!
