Washington: The United States is imposing the most significant energy sanctions on Russia yet, targeting Russia’s oil and LNG sectors, senior US administration officials said.

“The United States government will impose its most significant sanctions yet against the Russian energy sector, the largest source of revenue for the Kremlin’s war machine. These sanctions target both Russian oil and LNG, and we expect our actions to cost Russia upwards of billions of dollars per month,” the officials told reporters.

The officials noted that the new sanctions were imposed amid US energy abundance and booming production.

“One of the enablers of that is the health of the US domestic energy economy and our own growing production. So … our own energy abundance right now is one of the enablers of this effort to penalize Russia,” they said.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that the country would cope with the sanctions pressure that the West had begun to exert on Russia several years ago and continues to increase.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the policy of containing and weakening Russia was a long-term strategy of the West, and the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
